TAKE BACK YOUR INTERNET.

The battle for net neutrality changed today with the FCC’s ruling. Running my own internet radio station along with being an avid internet user for gaming, purchasing goods and service as well as just about every social media aspect of my life, makes this a pretty big deal to me as it should you. Here is a video I think you all should watch along with a quick snipet from CNET.

After more than a year of palace dramas worthy of a Shakespeare play, the FCC voted this morning to impose new rules on Internet access providers aimed at “preserving the open Internet.”

Today’s action is both anticlimactic and incomplete. Despite soap opera hand-wringing the last three weeks from fellow Democratic

commissioners, there was little doubt that Chairman Julius Genachowski had the votes he needed to pass this most recent version of the so-called “Net neutrality” rules, which he introduced on December 5. The two Republican commissioners strongly dissented from today’s vote.

But the commission, in part to incorporate the separate opinions of the commissioners, did not actually publish its order, which has been circulating inside the agency. Rumors are that the final document is close to 100 pages.

Different treatment for wired and wireless Internet
Still, the agency hinted today at the most important contents. The commission will impose three new rules on Internet access providers, a category that will be defined in the final order.

The rules prohibit access providers from blocking lawful content, applications, services, or nonharmful devices. (Blocking illegal fire sharing, which, in part, kicked off the latest version of this long-running drama, is not prohibited.) New transparency rules will require access providers to disclose the details of their network management techniques, something no consumer will likely be able to understand.

And, for Internet access provided by the cable or telephone infrastructure, traffic management that “unfairly discriminates” against particular content will be prohibited.

Wireless broadband, owing to the current limits of the wireless infrastructure, is exempt from that rule. It is also subject to a more limited blocking rule, one that would allow providers to continue operating “app stores” that require prequalification.

An article I think every dj should read, especially if you are struggling with technology and it’s place in the dj world.

If the only innovations dj software companies create are in the simplification and streamlining of basic dj functions then there will be nothing hard left to do. Along with simplifying the unimportant tasks- we must come up with new challenges that are fun for the dj and compelling to the crowd!

Marinade on that for a minute.

Got to get up to get down.

Here is the mix I did for Detroit. I finally got around to posting on Soundcloud so I thought I should post it here. Enjoy.

Writeup for DTM posting:

The HANDOUT series is the culmination of old tech meets new funk from Justin Hand, a veteran dj with over 23 years of time behind the decks and his start in the late 80’s, at the beginning of it all . With a combination of new releases and golden classics, Justin blends the mix to bring out the funk in tech. Each edition showcases a classic underground hit and forges the remaining tracks to compliment it’s sound while engaging the listener, allowing them to experience the feeling, whether in your car or on the dance floor.

Mr. Hand hits the mark with version 4, rocking Frank De Wulf’s seminal classic “Reforced”. De Wulf’s track was not only an electro pioneer but a track that spawned a generation of techno in its wake. Handout 4 brings it together with superbly mixed releases from Slam, Rino Cerrone, and Ghost Dancer to name a few. Delivering the goods yet again with Release 4, Justin brings the tech funk proper and direct, right to your speakers.

Movement 2010

demf2One a day or two since I’ve been back and the music is still playing over in my head. This years trip was one to remember. I was asked to give my thoughts on who stuck out but honestly I didn’t think anyone did because everyone was so on point. I think getting to perform at the BangTech12 party really changed my perceptions on the whole weekend and I felt more like I was apart of it than just being there experiencing it.  The pre-party completely set up the rest of the trip for nothing but fun times.  I went ahead and post most of the pics I have minus the blurries and “what the hell was that” shots.  I also managed to get a lot of good video of the Plastikman performance as well as Innercity, Model 500 and Bookashade live. Those are a bit large and i’ll have to post them later. I am really happy that with the help of friends, I managed to hand out all the cds that got made and a decent amount of flyers, considering the guards at the gate wouldn’t allow me to bring in my bag. It was a successful trip in that respect for sure.

I also consider the trip to the motherland a rejuvenation of sorts as well as justification on what it is that I love and do. Playing techno in Memphis is not the most rewarding of dj genres. I have to give props to my fellow brethren who stick with it regardless of the hip-hop and pop music culture that at times drowns us out. Make no mistake, Techno is alive and well. Now that I’m back, I feel supercharged and motivated to get back to work in the studio. Speaking about Movement, let’s get this machine started again and get moving forward.
